Experience the thrilling blend of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and northern hospitality in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. From breathtaking landscapes to enchanting historical sites, Reykjavik is full of attractions waiting to be explored.

Getting Around

To make the most of your time in Reykjavik, consider renting a car. By doing so, you can set your own pace and take advantage of Iceland’s incredible landscapes and attractions on your schedule. To rent a car in Reykjavik, click here.

Day 1: Exploring Reykjavik City

Start your first day by exploring the city center. Visit the impressive Hallgrimskirkja, Reykjavik’s tallest church, which offers panoramic views over the city. Next, take a stroll down Laugavegur, the city’s main shopping street, and then visit the old harbour area, known for its vibrant atmosphere and delicious seafood restaurants.

Day 2: The Golden Circle Tour

On the second day, embark on the famous Golden Circle tour. This journey will take you to Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, and the beautiful Gullfoss waterfall. Each destination offers unique Icelandic landscapes and stunning views that will leave you in awe.

Day 3: Relaxation at the Blue Lagoon

Visit the world-famous Blue Lagoon on your third day. Relax and rejuvenate in the geothermal waters, which are known for their healing properties. After your spa day, consider a visit to the nearby town of Grindavik for a taste of local cuisine.

Day 4: Museums and Culture

Dedicate the fourth day to immerse yourself in Icelandic culture. Start with the National Museum of Iceland to learn about the country’s history, then head to the Reykjavik Art Museum and explore the thriving local art scene. End the day at the Harpa Concert Hall for a show or simply admire the architectural beauty of the building.

Day 5: Whale Watching and Northern Lights

On day five, join a whale watching tour from Reykjavik’s old harbour. Icelandic waters are home to a diverse range of marine life, making it one of the best places in Europe for whale watching. Afterward, if you’re visiting between September and April, take a Northern Lights tour in the evening to witness the awe-inspiring Aurora Borealis.

Day 6: Outdoor Adventures

If you’re feeling adventurous on the sixth day, explore Iceland’s rugged landscapes. Try hiking at Mount Esja, located just outside Reykjavik, or horseback riding in the Icelandic countryside. For adrenaline junkies, consider quad biking or snowmobiling tours that are readily available.

Day 7: Reykjanes Peninsula

For the last day, visit the Reykjanes Peninsula. This UNESCO Geopark is home to the Bridge Between Continents, the only place in the world where you can walk across a bridge between two tectonic plates. End your day (and your trip) by exploring the quaint coastal towns of the peninsula, each offering its unique charm.

Day 8: Visit to the Perlan

On the eighth and final day of your trip, make a visit to the Perlan, a unique architectural marvel that offers panoramic views of Reykjavik. Inside, you will find an exciting interactive exhibition about Iceland’s glaciers and their future, making this a perfect ending to your Icelandic journey.

However, to truly immerse yourself in all the local gems and lesser-known attractions, consider booking an excursion. Platforms such as Excursopedia provide a range of guided tours in and around Reykjavik, enabling you to gain a deeper understanding of the city’s cultural and natural heritage from expert guides.

With a balance of self-guided exploration by rental car and guided tours, you can experience the best of what Reykjavik and Iceland have to offer. Your week in Reykjavik is set to be a journey of remarkable experiences, filled with scenic beauty, vibrant culture, and unforgettable adventures.
